As an important part of the northwest power grid, the ultra-high voltage backbone network of Xinjiang power grid has a voltage level of 750 kV. In this paper, the short transmission line of an ultra-high voltage project in Xinjiang is taken as the research background, and the feasibility analysis of closing resistance with high failure rate of short line circuit breaker is carried out. The maximum load data in winter of 2023 is used to model, and overvoltage analysis of closing no-load line operation with different measures according to the transmission lines. The calculation results show that there are some shortcomings in the installation of closing resistance and the cancelation of closing resistance of line circuit breaker. There is a large margin of energy consumption when the line circuit breaker uses the controllable arrester to limit the switching overvoltage. For the safety of the line and the system, it is not necessary to cancel the line closing resistance. If the closing resistance is to be canceled, controllable arrester devices can be installed to suppress the switching overvoltage of the closing no-load line operation.
