This chapter addresses the critical issue of water mismanagement and financial inefficiencies in water supply systems prevalent in Indian households. Despite the high cost of treating drinking water, households often consume excessive amounts without proportional payment. This not only leads to the wastage of water but also results in a substantial financial burden on the government, given the extensive and costly purification processes involved. To address these challenges, we propose an innovative solution to optimize water usage, prevent wastage, and streamline the billing process. We propose a dual-channel system: hard water, sourced from groundwater, for non-drinking purposes, and soft water, sourced from rivers, exclusively for drinking. Internet of Things (IoT) technology is integrated into the municipal water infrastructure. To ensure equal distribution and optimal use of water, a specific amount of water based on requirements will be allocated to each household. A cloud-based system is employed to collect sensor data, enabling real-time monitoring of household water usage and supply. Any request for additional water can be provided after proper approval. This measure aims to prevent excessive water consumption and promotes responsible usage. Additionally, Smart automation features including pipeline monitoring for leak detection, precise timer motors for effective pumping, and water level detection are also incorporated in the IoT system. Another key aspect of this proposal is the integration of a payment gateway with a digitalized water meter, facilitating accurate billing based on actual water consumption. This ensures that households are billed in proportion to the actual water consumption.
