Potential of Smart Sensors and Smart Waste Bins in Smart Waste Management

Waste in all of its forms like solid, liquid, and gaseous increases as a result of population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, and its effects are felt globally. Waste management includes lowering trash output, recycling, and reusing materials as well as other strategies to mitigate the effects of waste generation brought on by industrialization and an ageing population. Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, this chapter offers ideas on how trash management activities may be supported by smart cities and connected communities. The study offers a conceptual framework for a centralized waste management system and points out shortcomings in the current waste management practices. The framework is made up of interconnected elements that are thoroughly examined, such as smart waste bins that enable full visibility throughout a product’s lifespan, an intelligent sensor-based infrastructure for proper upstream waste separation and timely collection, and a series of new business models that relied on product lifecycle data to prevent waste generation. The framework that has been proposed places emphasis on the necessity of tying waste management practices to the full product lifecycle and the value of product lifecycle data in reducing waste and enhancing trash recovery. We have discussed one example of leveraging tracking and data-sharing technologies to investigate issues linked to trash management. Lastly, the success factors for implementing the proposed framework have been examined, along with a number of proposals for future research subjects.
