The operationalization of Automatic Generation Control (AGC) in the Indian power system by the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC), since July 20, 2021, has marked a significant milestone. At present, 70 power plants with a collective installed capacity of 67,337 MW are steadfastly operating round the clock. As the Indian power system undergoes a transformative phase characterized by a substantial integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, the demand for heightened flexibility to accommodate renewable intermittency has increased. In response to this evolving landscape, regulatory provisions have been strengthened through a Secondary Reserve Ancillary Services (SRAS) framework for AGC, facilitating the integration of emerging technologies, including battery storage, pumped hydro, demand response entities, electrolyzers, etc. AGC stands as a pivotal element in power systems, entrusted with the crucial responsibility of maintaining a delicate equilibrium between power generation and load demand. This chapter tries to meticulously explore the comprehensive process of integrating a power plant into the AGC framework, spanning from the procurement of hardware at the plant level to seamless 24x7 operation under AGC. The insights provided in this chapter would serve as a valuable guide for power plants, offering detailed information on establishing AGC infrastructure and effectively integrating with load dispatch centers to actively participate in AGC operations. The practical and actionable information presented in the chapter would aid power plants and Load Despatch Centers (LDCs) in navigating the complexities of AGC implementation.
