A Sustainable Approach to Enhance the Mechanical Properties of Cement with Spent Coffee Grounds

During the past few years, the world has competed to use resources that reduce costs and are environmentally friendly. The world's awareness on sustainability and saving power has increased due to the dwindling of the fossil fuel percentage on the earth. As a result, many different sectors are highly affected or will be affected by the decrease in fossil fuels. One of these sectors is the construction sector. Therefore, scientists try to create construction materials that are environmentally friendly to save more energy. The research studies the effect of adding spent coffee grounds (SCGs) on cement's properties, such as wet and dry density, water absorption, and compressive strength. This research aims to identify the optimal percentage of SCGs for achieving enhanced performance in cement. Different proportions of SCGs (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) were examined to assess their impact on cement properties. The findings reveal that incorporating SCGs into cement formulations positively contributes to their sustainability and energy efficiency. Among the tested percentages, 5% SCGs emerged as the most favorable, demonstrating the best performance in terms of wet and dry density, water absorption, and compressive strength. This result signifies that a modest addition of SCGs can significantly enhance the properties of cement, offering a sustainable and environmental solution for the construction industry.
