Regulatory Framework for Shrimp Culture and Handling: A Global Perspective
摘要
Shrimp, a universal seafood, is counted as a high-market-value product for its exceptional taste, attractiveness, flavor, and nutritional value. At global level, overexploitation of natural stocks, especially marine habitats, in the past decades widened the gap between market demand and supply of shrimp. Subsequently, in the 1970s, the increasing market demand for shrimp in Europe and the United States led to the establishment of commercial shrimp farming in several regions worldwide. Shrimp farming rapidly transformed into a productive and attractive enterprise, ultimately enticing more individuals to embark on their own shrimp farming endeavors. However, the outbreak of viral infectious agents, especially white spot syndrome virus, significantly affected the world shrimp production during 1990–2000. The adoption of nonscientific methodologies and the absence of regulating entities at the national and international levels made the shrimp farming situation worse in 1990s at both national and international scales exacerbated the prawn farming predicament in the 1990s. The occurrence of WSSV has imparted a valuable lesson, prompting nearly all nations engaged in prawn farming to establish new regulatory entities at the national level. Regulatory agencies have implemented a range of regulations and guidelines to govern prawn farming inside their individual nations, with the aim of achieving favorable outcomes. However, the recent progress in shrimp farming with intensive rearing techniques have resulted in various issues such as effluent discharge, unregulated use of antibiotics and other chemicals, production of antibiotic resistance strains, etc. Therefore, it is inevitable to relook the regulations and guidelines formed by those regulatory bodies in different shrimp-producing countries, especially in the major shrimp farming countries such as China, Ecuador, Vietnam, India, Thailand, and Indonesia, to understand the shrimp farming trend and trading at global perspectives.
