Strategies for Control of AMR Pathogens in Shrimp Farming: One Health Approach

Aquaculture is a major sector that contributes to global food and nutritional security. The losses occurring in the sector due to bacterial pathogens and the consequent indiscriminate use of antibiotics have resulted in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the aquatic environment. The high incidence of drug-resistant bacterial pathogens observed poses a severe threat to managing bacterial diseases in aquaculture. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of alternative agents such as probiotics, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), bacteriocins, immunostimulants, bacteriophages, herbal extracts, and nanoparticles such as chitosan against bacterial pathogens in shrimp farming and aquaculture. The One Health approach addresses the well-being of humans, animals, plants, and the environment, including shrimp health. To address the negative impact of antibiotic use, an insight into various strategies to control AMR in the shrimp farming sector to achieve “One Health” is presented in this chapter.
