Biological Applications of Acacia Gums (AGs) SME on Breast Cancer Cell Lines

This chapter examines the potential anti-tumor effects of solvent fractions from AGs on the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. This chapter observed significant apoptotic effects, including upregulation of Bax and caspases 3 and 9, along with morphological changes. Furthermore, the fractions showed anti-angiogenic effects by downregulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Non-toxic concentrations of the fractions also downregulated cyclin D1 and upregulated p21 and p27, indicating their potential as anti-tumor agents. This is the first report to support the use of AGs in traditional Sudanese medicine for BC treatment. These findings also establish a model for evaluating other plant secondary metabolites in the Sudanese flora. The methanol AGs fraction inhibited BC cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation. They arrested cells in the G0/G1 phase, induced apoptosis via the intrinsic pathway, and demonstrated VEGF-mediated anti-proliferative effects, suggesting their therapeutic value. This chapter also explored optimizing doxorubicin conjugation with AGs to potentially reduce adverse effects while maintaining therapeutic efficacy in BC treatment. AGs known as stabilizing properties are essential in making it relevant for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications because they contain secondary metabolites with various pharmacological effects.
