Cancer-on-a-chip technology holds immense potential for advancing personalized medicine and cancer research in Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) member countries. This study explores the opportunity to introduce this innovative technology in the region, considering its ability to replicate intricate cancer models, simulate tumor microenvironments, and facilitate drug development. Despite the availability of relevant infrastructure and human resources, no established mechanism currently exists to implement cancer-on-a-chip technology in IsDB member countries. The proposed strategy involves initiating a coordination platform among universities and governmental organizations, eventually spinning it off into a registered international company. This company would provide continuous quality services, offering a one-stop solution for cancer diagnosis and individualized treatment concepts. The growing organ-on-a-chip market, projected to reach $331 million by 2023, further highlights the potential of this technology. However, addressing the gap between developed and developing countries in accessing cancer technologies and treatments remains imperative. Challenges such as affordability, treatment abandonment, and limited access to state-of-the-art medical technology hinder progress in developing countries. Bridging this gap requires addressing economic burdens, enhancing screening programs, and improving access to advanced treatments. By leveraging the IsDB’s role in promoting social and economic development, the introduction of cancer-on-a-chip technology in member countries could significantly advance cancer research and personalized treatment approaches, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality rates.
