“AI is like fire. It can cook your food, or it can burn down your house”. What if your acquaintances suddenly start believing you to have committed actions which you have not? Words which you have not spoken? What if there is a clear video of you available online to the World, where you have done things which you have not? Would your World not turn upside down? Over the past few decades, technology has reached unprecedented levels—giving birth to new challenges humanity has never faced before—one of which, is deepfakes. Deepfakes can be images, videos, or even recordings which have been digitally altered in such a way that people are convinced that someone has done or said something which they have not. It has enabled the creation of realistic fakes through the use of artificial neural networks, data interpretation, and advanced AI techniques. While it is argued that deepfake algorithms may be used for more productive activities like classroom teaching, this paper intends to alert the general audience to the dangers that the technology poses to mankind and the probable legal solutions that one might look up to. Moreover, it also strives to provide a glimpse into the potential methods of mitigating these deepfake fabrications by developing an additional tool that functions as a countermeasure against deepfakes.
