The family is divided into two genera: Amalgavirus and Zybavirus (Tzanetakis et al. 2021). The name “amalgaviridae” stems from the word “amalgam,” reflecting the viral family’s composite nature, as these viruses exhibit traits akin to multiple viral groups. For instance, their RdRP shares similarities with those in Partitiviridae and Totiviridae, which typically infect fungi and protists. Additionally, the nucleocapsid proteins bear homology to those in the Bunyaviridae (specifically Phlebovirus) and Phenuiviridae (specifically Tenuivirus) families, suggesting a genetic linkage to diverse viral families (Wickner et al. 2012; Krupovic et al. 2015).
