With the onset of the “era of global boiling,” the world grapples with exacerbated climate changes and consequent water scarcity issues. This paper investigated a novel approach to address these challenges by synergizing asphalt pavements with geothermal systems for water desalination. The study evaluated the thermal performance of asphalt, its structural integrity when integrated with geothermal conduits, and the feasibility of the temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE) desalination process. Data collected from a major Riyadh roadway provided insights into the temperature profiles of asphalt layers. Furthermore, mechanical tests on asphalt samples revealed that copper conduits are more suitable than PVC for maintaining structural resilience in geothermal applications. A review of the experimental examinations of the TSSE method underscored its potential, with specific polymers showing promising desalination results. This research suggested that integrating geothermal systems with asphalt pavements can offer a sustainable solution for water desalination, presenting a significant stride toward addressing the water scarcity challenge in an era of escalating global temperatures.
