Surveys indicate that the majority of households prefer to set their heating temperature setpoints during periods of occupancy lower in the bedrooms, corridor and storage room and higher in the bathroom compared to the these in the living room. Individual room temperature control would allow more effective control compared to the conventional central room thermostat control which is commonly used in dwellings. This paper investigates the impact of upgrading the heating emission control on the energy consumption of a detached house in Belgium, and how this is affected by climatic changes. The simulations conducted in EnergyPlus show that individual room temperature control reduces the annual heating energy consumption of a centrally controlled house by approximately 27%. Although variations in the thermal resistance of the building envelope and climate changes affect the initial energy consumption and absolute differences, the relative savings appear to be independent.
