Due to the widespread implementation of hybrid work arrangements stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is worth examining the effect of working from home on energy consumption post-pandemic. Besides, it is important to explore the thermostat setting preferences of teleworkers when they are working from home. Data obtained through the “ecobee” thermostat system’s “Donate Your Data” program, encompassing over 22,000 connected thermostats across Canada spanning multiple years was used in this study to analyze occupancy patterns in Canadian homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, before (January 2017-February 2019) and after (June 2022-June 2023) the pandemic. This study investigated the evolving connection between working from home patterns as the prevalent example of partial occupancy in homes and thermostat use behavior in residential settings. Additionally, it addressed the prevalence of setback temperature strategies during winter in unoccupancy periods in households. The analysis indicated that 10% of the filtered 5,544 households in Canada adopted telework post-pandemic, with 50% of them working from home five days a week. Using the methodology described in this paper, it was found that 67% (377 out of 563) of households that adopted teleworking post-pandemic utilized a setback when departing their homes on weekdays during winter pre-pandemic. Furthermore, 54% of households that adopted telework post-pandemic used a higher thermostat setpoint in winter, while 73% used a lower setpoint in summer during office hours at home.
