Embracing the reuse of building materials is a rising solution to mitigate the environmental destructive effects of the construction sector. However, to prepare a material for reuse, several reclamation processes (e.g. dismantling, cleaning etc.) are necessary. Due to missing data, the environmental impact of the reclamation processes is mostly neglected in LCAs. Furthermore, as reclamation processes are often time-consuming and labor intensive, reused materials can be more expensive than new equivalents. This study will provide insight into the environmental impact and financial costs of reused ceramic bricks, compared to new equivalents. To calculate the environmental impact and financial costs of reclaimed bricks, essential data (energy, resources, machinery etc.) is gathered through interviews with experts in the field. In general, reusing bricks can result in an environmental gain of 72–75% compared to new masonry. The type of brick and mortar only slightly influence the environmental impact, while it has a significant influence on the financial costs, ranging from a reduction of 13% to an increase of 4% of the costs compared to new masonry. Mechanical cleaning, as opposed to the manual process, yields a negligible difference in environmental impact, but offers a substantial reduction in financial costs, amounting to a 17% decrease of costs compared to new bricks.
