Field Survey on Temperature/Humidity Environment and Heat-Source Energy Consumption in an Art Museum with Intermittent Air Conditioning Operation

The need for creating environments suitable for preserving valuable cultural properties while consuming less energy is an urgent issue, particularly in existing museums and exhibition facilitiesThe planning includes. This study is focused on an art museum in Japan. This facility consists of one exhibition room and three storage rooms. Electric heat pumps provide hot and cold water, which are stored in heat storage tanks and used in air-handling units (AHUs). The heat-source equipment and AHUs are operated intermittently owing to facility management restrictions. This paper aims at proposing operational improvements to create a more stable preservation and exhibition environment. The temperature/humidity in the exhibition and storage rooms and the power consumption of the heat-source equipment were measured, and the current operational conditions of the air-conditioning equipment were investigated. It was revealed that the energy required for dehumidification increases in hot and humid summers. A relatively large temperature and humidity change was detected when the air conditioner was restarted. After the temperature settings were changed, the temperature and humidity changes were found to be smaller in the underground storage rooms.
