Thermal bridges in building components can have a significant effect on the thermal resistance (R-value) of the components. A reflective insulation installed in metal framing exhibits three-dimensional heat flow due to the high thermal conductivity of the metal, radiative transport and natural convection. In this research, a validated numerical model is used to: (a) evaluate the thermal performance of reflective insulation systems (RIS) in metal framing, and (b) evaluate ways to reduce the thermal impact of metal framing and improve performance. The numerical results are used to determine the R-values of RIS and combinations of RIS and conventional insulations (Hybrid Systems).
