Photoremediation—An Emerging Approach for Dye Degradation in Wastewater Treatment

Since ancient times, dyes have been highly regarded for their wide use to significantly improve the aesthetic qualities of a material, serve as a layer to protect a material, or as indicators. Due to the high demand for dyes from industries, a high volume of wastewater is generated which adversely affects the ecosystem. Conventional treatment processes of dye-polluted wastewater have high costs, high energy requirements, low efficiency, and high sludge production. Thus, innovative treatment approaches are developed to combat these disadvantages. Photoremediation is one of the promising dye degradation techniques which involves the use of light and a catalyst for the decontamination of waste through oxidation and hydrolysis. Several nanoparticles based on TiO2 and ZnO are extensively studied for their photocatalytic properties and the subsequent degradation of a wide array of dyes. These studies show promising catalytic performance for the dye degradation application. These can be the future of dye wastewater treatment.
