Historically, the field of enzymology was born out of practical and theoretical considerations. A perusal of early enzyme literature indicates that the field has evolved from fundamental questions about their function, their nature, and their biological role. This chapter outlines the course of the historical development of enzymology and some of these landmarks are listed in Table 2.1.
