The future ahead is uncertain and challenging, because it relies on imagination to create new ways of living and being in the world, considering Anthropocene scenarios, and has, at its essence, the potential to expose our most acute accumulated fragilities. Questions to develop an ecological civilization are related to the future we desire and need to create to surpass the Anthropocene; how we should collectively imagine ways of organizing and operating within planetary limits; how we will adapt to climate change; what changes we should introduce to guarantee “buen vivir” for the population majority, and, most importantly, how to enable the creation of these imaginaries while immersed in capitalism, which is in itself an established and instituting social and hegemonic imaginary. This work will reflect on the role of education in shaping individuals capable of addressing these issues and becoming active citizens in the development of an ecological civilization. The role of the Earth Charter as an ethical compass in formulating this future will also be discussed.
