Ecological Civilization (EC) is a central guiding principle in China’s policy paradigm, aimed at addressing severe environmental challenges facing both China and the global community through technological innovation and ecological knowledge (Hansen et al., Glob Environ Change 53:195–203, 2018; Peters and Green, Beijing Int Rev Educ 3:5–21, 2021). As a state-initiated vision, EC is deeply rooted in Chinese philosophical traditions, particularly Confucianism, which it leverages to construct a vision for the global future that aligns with China’s national identity (Hansen et al., Glob Environ Change 53:195–203, 2018). This chapter explores the relationship between Chinese traditional philosophies and the emergence and development of EC, as well as the links between ecopedagogy, ecological civilization, and these traditional philosophies. Through this exploration, the chapter aims to unveil the philosophical foundations of EC, highlight the critical role of Chinese traditional philosophy in nurturing this concept, position EC as a potentially transformative model for global environmental stewardship, and point out how ecopedagogy can engender a cultural shift toward this transformation—all of which can offer profound wisdom in addressing global environmental challenges.
