This chapter investigates human desires in relation to economic organization mediated by technology. In the context of the call for an ecological civilization, understanding desire is claimed key in finding alternatives for unsustainable development. Desire is conceptualized here as a manifestation of the libidinal foundation of existence. Our desires shape earthbound relations. For advancing sustainability, libidinal desires directed at economic growth and further technologization must be reoriented toward degrowth and endosomatic instruments. This reorientation will reduce matter-energetic throughput, which is a prerequisite for moving to an ecological civilization. Instead of desires spiraling-out of the planetary boundaries, a process of spiraling-in is called for. The chapter suggests that basing economic activities on care and life-affirming libidinal relations to ecological bodies will support the needed metamorphosis.
