HigherEducation Education Institutions have huge potential to foster sustainable human development. HEIs can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices by incorporating the principles of teaching, research, operations, and knowledge transfer regarding sustainability. The study utilizes secondary data sources to find out the major sustainable practices in the selected higherEducation education institutions. The study tries to explore what are the areas in which Universities work and what sustainable practices these Universities are adopting related to social, economic, environmental, and governance dimensions. An index to gauge the level of adherence to sustainable measures by different Central Universities in India is also the purpose of the study. The study has used content analysis to rate the HEIs and narrative information to help HEIs find out their strengths and focus on sustainable practices that require attention. Finally, the levels ofSustainability sustainability practices adopted by select HEIs were measured using the sustainability index. The HEIs scores were divided into quartiles to get very high, high, moderate, and low scores of performing HEIs. It has been found that sustainable practices in the Indian HEIs are in the infancy stages as far as reporting and implementation are concerned in India. The accreditation and ranking requirements in India have pushed many HEIs to take up initiatives in sustainability. Further, the present study provides insights into the Indian HEIs with reference to focusing on sustainable practices. The results of the study are beneficial for the policymakers, universityUniversity authorities and others concerned to make sustainable plans for the higherEducation education institutions in India.
