The hot cells of fast reactor spent fuel reprocessing plant are closed containment boxes in which radioactive materials are handled. They are shielded with a lead wall for beta and gamma radioactivity. The illumination inside hot cells is provided by lamps mounted on lead-filled lighting plugs which are arranged in the lead wall in front of the lighting windows. The dimension of the opening to place light fixtures inside lead wall is kept small to prevent radiation leakage. Illumination inside containment box is required to be minimum 1000 lux. There is no provision in the hot cell for cooling to dissipate the heat generated by the light-emitting diode (LED) lights. To meet the above challenging requirements, a compact and high-power LED light fixture cooled by a copper heat pipe was designed. The LED light fixture was tested and qualified for operation in the harsh environment of the lead-walled hot cell of the nuclear plant.

摘要
