Research on Fatigue Life Analysis of Non-standard Socket Welding Fittings and the Influence of the Weld Gap on the Weld Stress Distribution

In this paper, the socket welding fittings, containing three kind of different weld gaps, have been welded by the tee fittings and the nozzles. Fatigue tests have been carried out, and the fatigue life has been obtained to investigate the influence of the nozzle offset. Then the macro metallographic tests have been conducted, and the real shape of the weld in the socket welding fittings has been observed and measured. Finally, finite element models of the three kinds of socket welding fittings have been established, the weld numerical simulation has been conducted, and the residual stress of the weld has been obtained. Besides, the alternating stress distribution of the weld has been calculated based on the residual stress and the cyclic loadings. According to the test results and finite element analysis, it can be found that under the condition of the current welding process, the nozzle offset is allowed, and the maximum allowable offset degree is 33%. In this case, the fatigue life of non-standard socket welding fittings will not decrease, and the non-standard socket welding fittings can be considered to meet the design requirements and no need to repair or scrap.
