This study aimed to explore the impact of air pollutant emissions at a toll plaza on a busy national highway in India, recognizing that the stop-and-go movement of vehicles in this setting may differ from normal free-flowing traffic environments. Elevated mean concentrations were observed inside the toll booth compared to outside for Black Carbon (30.82 µg m−3 vs. 12.30 µg m−3), PM2.5 (152.26 µg m−3 vs. 136.65 µg m−3), and Ultrafine Particles (11,312.8 pt cm−3 vs. 6182.98 pt cm−3). The concentrations of pollutants have increased during the evening hours compared to morning. Traffic volume showed positive correlation and temperature, wind speed, solar radiation and boundary layer height showed negative correlation with pollutant concentration. Furthermore, the risk estimate determined were higher (RQ range: ~0.49–1.63 for BC and ~5.45–8.26 for PM2.5) than the prescribed limit (RQ < 1), underscoring the necessity to manage personal exposure to pollutants, particularly near traffic sites.
