Sustainable Remediation Strategies for Petroleum Refinery Wastewater: An In-depth Analysis of Constructed Wetlands—A Review

Petroleum refinery and petrochemical plants contribute significantly to organic water pollution, posing environmental concerns. Biological processes show COD removal of 60–90%, but struggle with petroleum hydrocarbons and produce oily sludge. Advanced oxidation processes offer rapid COD removal but are costly. Constructed wetlands emerge as an effective, economical solution, exhibiting around 80% COD removal in treating high-strength petroleum refinery wastewater. Horizontal subsurface flow CWs outperform other types, achieving over 80% removal of heavy oil and recalcitrant organics. System modifications such as aeration variations and hybridization, enhance overall performance. This review underscores CWs as cost-effective and efficient solutions for mitigating refinery wastewater pollution.
