Performance Evaluation of Sequencing Batch Reactor for Treatment of Rice Mill Wastewater Using Aerobic Granulation

Present study examined the impact of pre-anaerobic reaction time and feeding time on the process of aerobic granulation in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) in rice mill wastewater (RMW). A completely aerobic fast feed SBR (R1) and 60 min of slow feeding SBR (R2) in pre-anaerobic condition were chosen for the study. The findings indicated that the compact granules that were grown in R1 underwent a disappearance during the initial stages of operation. Over time, these granules transformed into larger-sized structures, with sizes typically falling within the range of 1.18–2.36 mm. Aerobic granules formed in R2 has a defined boundary with size ranging between 0.3 and 1.18 mm. SVI30 values at steady state were 50 mL/g, and 35 mL/g in R1 and R2, respectively. No effect of anaerobic feeding was observed for COD and NH4+ removal efficiencies of both reactors, but difference had been observed in TN (total nitrogen) and PO43− removal. Average TN removal rates were 60 and 80% and average PO43− removal rates were 53 and 75% for R1 and R2, respectively.
