Geotextile Reinforced Soil Wall with Segmental Block Facing at Iskandar Puteri, Johor Darul Ta’zim, Malaysia

Iskandar Puteri is a newly developed township in Johor, Malaysia. It is one of the flagship zones of Iskandar Malaysia and will host the largest fully integrated urban development in Southeast Asia once it is completed. This paper focuses on designing and constructing a geotextile-reinforced segmental wall within the Iskandar Puteri region. The design of the geotextile-reinforced segmental wall involved the evaluation of various potential failure modes, including global, internal, and external factors, as outlined in BS8006:2010 and NCMA guidelines. A noteworthy aspect of this project was the strategic use of locally available backfill materials. This decision contributed to cost-effectiveness and aligned with environmentally responsible construction practices. This study highlights the feasibility of utilizing locally sourced backfill materials in geotextile-reinforced soil wall projects, provided that comprehensive suitability assessments, appropriate design methodologies, and meticulous construction practices are followed. The constructed wall spans approximately 1,385 m, with a variable exposed height ranging from 2.0 to 7.0 m and an embedded depth of 0.6 to 0.8 m. The wall configuration includes both single-tier construction with and without backslope, with backslope heights ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 m. This geotextile-reinforced segmental wall was completed in 2022 and has demonstrated reliable performance to date.
