Cryosphere Disasters in the Three Poles and Responses

To address the impact of climate change, SDG13 is established with the goal of “take urgent action to address climate change and its impacts” (hereinafter referred to as “climate action”). The primary task is to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change while enhancing our capacity to response effectively. Glaciers serve as natural indicators of climate change. Climate change has aggravated the melting and instability of ice, leading to a rapid increase of cryosphere disasters. At present, ice collapse, glacial lake expansion, and thaw slumping induced by permafrost degradation have become the main disaster risks. This chapter aims to systematically investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of global alpine glacier collapse, glacier surging, glacial lake outburst flood events and thaw disasters in the Northern Hemisphere. It pays attention to the impact of melting of the Antarctic ice sheet and the Arctic Greenland ice sheet on sea level rise, reveals their changing rules and spatial patterns, analyzes and clarifies the exposure of the three poles under the climate change, assesses the consequences of cryosphere disasters, and provide decision-making support for sustainable development.
