Flood Hazard Mapping of Hyderabad Using HEC-GEORAS—A Case Study

Floods represent a natural catastrophe that leads to extensive devastation and loss of human life. In order to anticipate flood behavior and safeguard critical infrastructure, flood inundation mapping is an invaluable tool. Crafting a floodplain map involves the imperative task of collecting data regarding the behavior of watercourses in various locations during flood events and subsequently presenting this information in a visual format. The process of mapping floods is an essential initial phase in formulating strategies for managing flood risks in rapidly growing urban regions like Hyderabad. During a flood occurrence, structures submerged in water are classified based on their intended use. In the case of Hyderabad, floods predominantly arise from heavy rainfall, resulting in the accumulation of water in numerous areas. This surplus water inundates streets and entire neighborhoods, leaving residents trapped in their residences and causing substantial harm to public assets. It's worth mentioning that Hyderabad has a sorrowful history of catastrophic flooding, most notably the tragic event of 1908 along the Musi River, which claimed the lives of 50,000 inhabitants. The River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) of the Hydrologic Engineering Centre uses models to create water surface profiles at specific locations along the watercourse in order to simulate flood scenarios. Subsequently, the outcomes produced by HEC-RAS are transferred to ArcGIS to craft visual representations referred to as Flood Elevation Maps. The main objective of this study is to produce flood maps by integrating geomorphic, topographic, and hydrological data using GIS and the HEC-Geo RAS /HEC-RAS model.
