Rainwater harvesting is a time tested method of water conservation and flood mitigation. However its existence is still unknown to several water starved tribal communities. The Deuri people of Nam Deuri village in Jorhat district of Assam is one such community. The community suffers annually from floods in the monsoons and drought like situation in the dry season. This study aims to introduce and implement low cost environment friendly Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) systems in the houses of Nam Deuri village. In contrast to the conventional RWH system the Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes are being replaced by bamboo poles. This has been done keeping in mind the ready availability of bamboo in the region. The sloping rooftops of the tribal households will act as the catchment area from where the rainwater is carried via the bamboo poles to the storage tanks. Cost of building the proposed RWH system will be approximately Rs. 20,000/- for a single house. Maintenance costs will be negligible due to the ready availability of bamboo and caretaker’s training program proposed in this study.
