Acute pharyngitis is a common condition encountered in outpatient settings. The majority of cases are caused by viral infections and are typically self-limiting. Common clinical features include sore throat and fever, with or without a cough. Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) is the most common bacterial cause, accounting for a small proportion of cases. These require appropriate antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.
