A 33-year-old male patient with IgA nephropathy undergoing maintenance peritoneal dialysis presented with renal anemia, type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Despite prior insulin and statin therapy, his glycemic and lipid profiles remained poorly controlled. Roxadustat was prescribed at a standard dose for correcting the anemia. Not surprisingly, his hemoglobin gradully raised from 74 g/L to 124 g/L after a couple of months treatment. Unexpectedly, we found the patient hyperglycemia improved as well, which allowed us to discontinuation of insulin, together with the improvement of BMI and hypercholesterolemia. No adverse events were reported throughout the treatment period. This interesting case highlights the additional beneficial effect of roxadustat for the metabolic disorder when it is used for correcting anemia.
