Serpentine (Asbestos)

Serpentine (Mg 6Si 4O 10(OH) 8 or 3MgO·2SiO 2·2H 2O) is the name of a group of magnesium-silicate minerals with a 1:1-type (TO-type) trioctahedral layer structure. It has three mineral species or polymorphs: lizardite, chrysotile, and antigorite. In the mineral crystallochemical classification, serpentine belongs to the silicates, the phyllosilicate subclass with a layer structure, and the serpentine group. The most industrially valuable chrysotile is serpentine asbestos, which has a one-dimensional fibrous structure and can be split into fine, soft fibers. It is also known as chrysotile asbestos. Therefore, in the structural-functional classification of mineral raw materials, serpentinite belongs to the one-dimensional structural mineral category and the functional mineral subcategory.
