Oxidizability of Minerals

The oxidizability of a mineral refers to the phenomenon where the mineral’s original properties are altered due to oxidation. Native minerals, especially those containing variable valence elements (Fe, Mn, S, etc.), when exposed on the surface or under surface conditions, undergo oxidation due to the actions of oxygen in the air and water containing oxygen and carbon dioxide, causing ions in a reduced state to become oxidized, such as Fe 2+ becoming Fe 3+ and S 2− or (S 2) 2− becoming S 6+, leading to the destruction of native minerals and the formation of some stable minerals in oxidative environments. For example, low-valence oxides can be converted into high-valence oxides or hydroxides, sulfides can be converted into sulfates, and so on. Or, when the oxidation process is not thoroughly carried out, it can cause changes in the surface characteristics of minerals. The reasons for mineral oxidation are twofold: internal factors and external factors.
