Emerging Molecular Tools and Breeding Strategies for Plant Bacterial Disease Management
摘要
Plant bacterial diseases pose an enormous challenge to the global food supply chain. Traditionally, the management of plant diseases has relied on applying chemical control measures, antibiotics, biocontrol agents, and the use of resistant varieties. Many of these measures impact human health and the environment adversely due to either being toxic and non-biodegradable or risks of evolving antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. The molecular tools and breeding strategies have the potential to be a pivotal frontier in mitigating the impact of plant-bacterial diseases. The molecular tools encompassing genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics unravel the complexities of host–pathogen interactions at the molecular depth. Likewise, advanced breeding strategies, including marker-assisted selection and genome editing techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 are emerging as the methods of choice to develop disease-resistant plant varieties more sustainably. This chapter digs into applications of these tools and studies illustrating successful implementations and challenges in deploying these methodologies. The chapter envisions the trajectory of future innovations, anticipating the role of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology in reshaping the landscape of plant bacterial disease management.
