Considering the nature of evolving trends of extreme weather conditions within the European Union, different measures have been undertaken over time within the parameters of disaster management. This chapter highlights different legislations tactics devised by the European Union that helped to reduce the devastating effects of the natural disasters. The disaster management laws by the EU were based on the need for EU members to have a response mechanism that is more coordinated in the event of emergency and disasters. Different successes and challenges have been experienced in the sectors of risk management, providing key learning outcomes for improvement in sector preparedness and response frameworks. Therefore, the chapter provides a review of the multifaceted approach by the EU in implementing the risk management frameworks with guidance from previous European Union Treaties. An overview is also provided of specific disaster events within the EU, and the resultant implications of the legislative actions—to detect future trends that will affect policy actions.
