Mechanical Design is a process that has multiple components, and it often involves iterations. Describing the steps involved in designing a specific machine component is not difficult in a regular classroom setting. However, one must go through the entire process and come up with a solution to a specific design problem to understand the design process as it also involves the other machine components of the same system. In this paper, that is referred to as “design practice”. We aim to implement a component of “design practice” in a regular Machine Design class. In the current work, various attempts that have been made over the years to implement the design practice seamlessly in the existing curriculum are described. The effectiveness of each implementation attempt has been discussed from the Student Learning Outcome (SLO) standpoint. The process itself is getting modified as the curriculum gets revised. The authors realize this itself is a pedagogical design to lead all the students in a class to go through at least one “design practice” experience.
