Design education is at a crossroads where it must determine whether to change to become more technically or scientifically focused or whether to stick with its current emphasis on the outward look of artefacts. With its current focus, the factor of falling employment of high-order jobs becomes a cause for concern. The key factor in its decline is that the bulk of college design programmes still place a strong emphasis on how things appear from the outside. To address this situation, we must therefore start a carefully considered effort to re-evaluate design education for the twenty-first century. The objective should be to provide design decisions with a rigorous, scholarly foundation based on facts. The second aim is to assist designers in their efforts to advance social and environmental responsibility. Instead of considering the value of design school in terms of a recent graduate's ability to find a job, we need to shift focus on how a degree might lay the groundwork for innovation, influence, and ambition. This chapter is a commentary on the role of education to sow the seeds of greatness.
