An important turning point in the development of modern medicine was the invention of antibiotics as a technique for treating and controlling infectious diseases, but humans and animals can become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria—the most either through interaction with an affected animal or partly through the food chain by consuming food that has been contaminated. Food safety is a major concern for public health around the world because it is essential to sustaining life and fostering health. The uncontrolled use of antibiotics becomes a potential harm to human health as well as the environment. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged as a result of the increased usage of antimicrobial medications to treat animal illnesses. Due to the widespread use of agrochemicals such as pesticides and herbicides, weeds are becoming more and more resistant to herbicides. The development of vaccines will lessen the need for antibiotics in systems of an intensive culture for disease management. The World Health Organization has released a worldwide initiative to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance, which is approved by several Southeast Asian nations.
