Bacteriocins as an Antimicrobial Agent for the Treatment of AMR in Aquaculture

Aquaculture is a large source of food worldwide. Excessive use of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents has led to the development of antibiotic resistance in aquatic systems. This resistance can be transferred to humans via the food chain, and it can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens through the transfer of resistance genes from aquatic bacteria to human pathogens. There are various researches going on to combat this issue. There are various researches going on to combat this issue using plant and microbe-based remedies against aqua pathogens. Antimicrobial peptides, more specifically, bacteriocins, are small proteinaceous molecules that are synthesized and secreted by bacteria. Bacteriocins are considered a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics due to their high specificity, low toxicity, and ability to be produced by natural microorganisms. Addition of bacteriocin or bacteriocin-secreting bacteria to aquaculture acts as an alternative to control morbidity and is considered safe as it does not have any adverse effect. The use of bacteriocins as antimicrobial agents can help control bacterial infections and reduce the selective pressure that drives the emergence of antibiotic resistance.
