Effectiveness of Zycotherm Additive as an Antistripping Agent on Bituminous Mixes

Stripping has become a significant issue in bituminous paving mixtures. Pavement stripping is the process of losing the bond between the aggregates and bitumen. It weakens pavements structurally and necessitates expensive repairs. Additionally, it may contribute to early pavement failures like rutting and ravelling. A key factor that affects bitumen performance and service life is the adhesion in the bituminous mix. The aggregate-bitumen bond is enhanced by one of three mechanisms: improved aggregate surface, reduced surface tension of bitumen, which promotes bituminous binder spreading through the aggregate, and improved chemical properties of both aggregate and bituminous binder. The use of anti-stripping additives is a common method of reducing stripping in bituminous mixtures. Antistripping agents are chemical mixtures containing an active functional group that helps to improve the adhesion of bitumen on the surface of aggregates. This paper aims to determine the effects of Zycotherm on bituminous mix stripping resistance. In the present study, the bitumen is modified by adding 0.03–0.15% Zycotherm. The effect of Zycotherm on stripping resistance is evaluated through a boiling water test and static-immersion test followed by image analysis. The mixture modified with 0.1% Zycotherm showed the best performance, according to the results.
