Transition Between Compensation Modes in a Variable Displacement Pump with a Double-Spool Valve

A compensator in a variable displacement pump often involves two spools—one actuated by delivery-pressure sensing, or DPS, and the other by load sensing, or LS. Despite the expected higher efficiency, occasional actuation oscillation has kept the LS mode enablement an optional external arrangement in contrast to always enabled DPS mode through in-built internal flow lines in the pump. An experimental study has been carried out here over a wide range of adjustable settings of the two compensator spools. A solenoid-operated 4/3 proportional valve with a deadband and a pressure relief valve in series from one actuation port has been used to set the load sensing from a tapping in the line between these two valves. The line connected with the other actuation port of the 4/3 valve has been plugged. An interesting transition between the LS and DPS modes of operation has been identified during progressive stepped increase of the valve excitation. It is indeed satisfying to find no oscillation except during excitation within the deadband range that has occurred under both the modes.
