Electrical Characteristics of Thunderstorms Over India

Electrical, microphysical, and dynamic characteristics in a cloud occur almost simultaneously inside thunderclouds and interact with each other and understanding this interaction is essential to recognize several phenomena such as cloud bursts, rain gush, and tornadoes and better prediction of such events. Many fields and laboratory experiments have been conducted in the USA and Europe to study the electrical characteristics associated with thunderstorm. However, very few studies have been conducted in India to understand the electrical properties of thunderclouds and their interaction with dynamics and micro-physics of cloud. Studies conducted over Pune and other locations in India have shown that some thunderstorms forming over India have inverted polarity charge structure. This inverted polarity charge structure can be attributed to increased aerosol concentration or high liquid water content in mixing layer. Laboratory and field experiments also have shown that electric forces in thundercloud can significantly affect rain formation processes in thunderclouds. Here, we review some important studies conducted to understand the electrical characteristics of thunderstorms over India.
