Observation and Simulation of Severe Storms Over China

Convective storms in China are often organized by multiple convective cells, and most of which develop to be a mesoscale convective system (MCS) that is characterized by an organized regions of deep convection within horizontal hundreds of kilometers and over a time span exceeding 6 h. Severe convective storm, generally as an intense convective cell, occurs within MCS, and is often further associated with hazardous weather, including extreme rainfall, severe winds, severe hail and tornadoes, some of which can be destructive and deadly. Given a large fraction of studies in China focusing on the climatological MCS and individual extreme events that are associated with severe convective storms, the present chapter aims to introduce the spatiotemporal character of the MCS in China, with special attention given to the characteristics, structures, and microphysical features of the severe convective storms that produce extreme rainfall, tornadoes, and severe hail based upon observation and simulation for some notorious cases occurred in the period of recent 10 years. This comprehensive analysis of convective storms in China provides valuable insights into their microphysical processes, tornado characteristics, hail storm dynamics, and overall organization patterns, contributing to improved weather forecasting, disaster preparedness, and mitigation efforts in the country.
