Optimization of Geometric Properties of Deck Arch Steel Bridge Using Analytical Study

Bridges help to connect the different regions, roads, valleys, or water bodies to transfer goods and services, people and so on. A deck arch bridge is an ideal bridge with the deck at the top of the crown of the arch, usually connected by spandrels. A parametric study is conducted by varying configurations of deck steel arch bridges, including different spans (75, 80, 85, 90, 95 m) of the arch; it indirectly changes the angle and rise of the arch. These bridges are analysed and designed using MIDAS CIVIL software considering IRC 05 (dimensions), IRC 06 (loading), IRC 24 (design) and IRC: SP 114 (seismic analysis). The elastic behaviour of these bridges is compared in terms of bending moment and shear force in main girder, arch rib and cross beams, and axial force in brace and spandrel for critical load combinations. It is preferable to have an arch span varying from 80 to 90 m. Based on the material consumption, the most optimum size of a deck steel arch bridge is estimated with an arch span of 80 m.
