Assessment of fabric quality is typically a subjective process; however, Kawabata and Niwa introduced an objective measurement technique known as “fabric hand.” Fabric hand is a crucial parameter in fabric marketing, specifically targeting application areas. Several factors influence it, including fiber characteristics, yarn type, fabric structure, and wet processing methods. Low-stress mechanical properties are more relevant for analyzing everyday garments and impact properties like fabric drapes and are thus predominantly used to determine fabric total hand values (T.H.V.). Grey woven fabrics are often stiff and rigid due to residual tension within the fabric. Common methods to release this tension include steam application and hot water baths. Surface modification of textile structures ensures value addition that increases profitability for manufacturers. Softeners are frequently employed for aesthetic appreciation of textiles. Using softeners for surface modification can potentially alter the overall hand values of the fabric. This research paper delves into the impact of varying blend ratios of soybean, wool, and polyester fibers on low-stress mechanical properties and the assessment of total hand values for these fabrics. Additionally, it aims to investigate the effect of surface modification with amino silicone softeners on the T.H.V. of selected fabric samples. Notably, amino silicones were most effective when applied to soybean fiber and its blends.
