The jute industry, once a cornerstone of employment, has faced significant challenges in recent decades due to the emergence of synthetic alternatives. In 2022, India produced 1080 thousand metric tons of jute goods, reflecting a decline of over 10% in the past decade. Analysis by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) identified the cost advantage of polypropylene packaging materials as a primary factor driving this decline. However, there remains potential for the jute industry to contribute to research and development efforts, particularly in the realm of sustainable and value-added biproducts beyond traditional packaging applications. Technical advancements in areas such as technical textiles and natural fiber-reinforced composites offer promising avenues for innovation, leveraging the unique characteristics of jute fibers and polymers to meet diverse end-user requirements. In this study, we explored the application of vinyl sulphone reactive dyes in conjunction with carbon nanoparticles to enhance the strength of jute-based materials. Our experimental findings indicate that this relatively simple and cost-effective coloration process can yield strength enhancements exceeding 50%. These results not only demonstrate the feasibility of improving jute products through novel dyeing techniques but also underscore the potential for diversification into a range of value-added products. This research contributes to ongoing efforts to revitalize the jute industry by identifying pathways for enhanced product development and market competitiveness.
