CFD and Experimental Analysis for Optimal Cooling System Design in Theatres

This research presents a comprehensive study on the design and optimization of effective cooling systems for theatres. Environmentally, theatres are the most complex auditorium structures which pose unique challenges due to their high heat load and consistent full occupancy. The motivation behind this research lies in the critical need to enhance the comfort and well-being of theatre audiences while also addressing energy efficiency concerns. Theatres often host extended performances and events, making it imperative to create an environment that ensures the audience’s thermal comfort. To achieve this, we conducted experiments to identify the level of thermal comfort within theatres. The procedure involved supplying air to the theatre from various directions, including the side, top, and bottom, and analyzing the best thermal comfort area for the audience. The findings indicate that, after 240 s, the most satisfactory thermal environment was established when air was supplied at the side walls, resulting in a substantial temperature drop of 21.2 °C This research and experimentation provide a solid foundation for the development of well-designed, efficient air distribution systems in theatres, which can lead to enhanced audience satisfaction and energy savings.
